Get detailed elevation profiles and difficulty ratings for any trail. Uses scientific formulas to calculate effort required and estimated hiking time.
Analyze any hiking trail
Enter GPS coordinates for your trail to get elevation profiles, difficulty ratings, and time estimates based on the Shenandoah hiking formula.
This tool uses the Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Formula to calculate trail difficulty: sqrt(2 × elevation gain in feet × distance in miles). Time estimates use Naismith's Rule: 5km/hour + 1 hour per 600m ascent. Elevation data is sourced from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) via OpenTopoData.
Trail Difficulty Auditor is free and always will be — no account needed. Leave an email and we'll tell you when the next one ships.
