Trail Difficulty Auditor

Analyze any hiking trail

Enter GPS coordinates for your trail to get elevation profiles, difficulty ratings, and time estimates based on the Shenandoah hiking formula.

Find Your Trail

Tip: For best results, enter the trail name exactly as known (e.g., "Angel's Landing", "Half Dome Trail"). The analysis estimates difficulty based on the trail's general terrain. For precise results, use the coordinates mode with actual GPS waypoints.

How It Works

This tool uses the Shenandoah Hiking Difficulty Formula to calculate trail difficulty: sqrt(2 × elevation gain in feet × distance in miles). Time estimates use Naismith's Rule: 5km/hour + 1 hour per 600m ascent. Elevation data is sourced from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) via OpenTopoData.
